UEFA Champions League | Betting tips, analyses and predictions

The UEFA Champions League is one of the greatest spectacles in team sports. It also happens to be a sports bettor’s paradise. Originally founded in 1955 as the European Champions Cup, only winners from each national league were invited to play in a straight knockout tournament. The event has reshaped itself over the years. The Champions League we know and love today took shape in 1992. The current format is not only for national winners - if a country has a strong soccer pedigree, more than one squad is invited to compete for the title. Conversely, a national league winner from a small country may need to fight tooth and nail to reach group play. Spanish club team Real Madrid has won the Champions League an amazing 13 times, including three titles in a row between 2016 and 2018. Germany, Italy and England all have double-digit appearances in finals history, but Spain tops that category as well with 29 finals appearances. With so much international flair, you can be sure the betting action will be intense. Our analysts track both the matchups and the betting lines offered by bookies to give you their betting advice and predictions. Read on to find out how it all works.

How does the Champions League work?

The Champions League does not operate in the traditional sense. You won’t find betting opportunities every week as you would for most leagues. The best way to describe the format is to say the tournament has a group phase and then a knockout phase. UEFA has a clever and complicated system to figure out who comes into the tournament and when. This system is based on the relative strength of a country’s soccer program. Traditional powerhouse countries such as Spain, Italy, German and England each receive four bids. A smaller team such as Lichtenstein will have to do a lot of winning in the qualifying and group stages if they hope to reach the knockout rounds. Here is a breakdown of the tournament format:

  • The 32 teams who survive the qualification stages are divided into 8 groups of 4 teams. No teams from the same league will face each other in this round. Each team will play the other teams in their group both home and away. The top two finishers from each group move along in the tournament. The third-place finishers from each group are eligible to play in the parallel UEFA Europa League Cup.
  • The round of 16: Tournament officials ensure that no number one seed faces another one seed. Play is home and away.
  • Quarterfinals and semifinals: No restrictions regarding seeding and national grouping. Play is home and away.
  • Finals: A one-off game at a neutral stadium. The winning teams earns € 19,000,000 while the runner-up receives € 15,000,000.

The betting action goes into high gear when the groups are announced. Betting providers offer a huge selection of betting markets at this point. That makes sense because both bookmakers and gamblers have a clear picture of each team. We analyze all the matchups and offer our expert advice. Our predictions, betting tips and odds comparison feature will help you place the winning bet at the best price.

When do the Champions League games take place?

The UEFA Champions League group stage begins in mid-September (qualifying begins a few short weeks after the finals), with the finals being held at the end of May or beginning of June. The match days in the group phase usually take place every 2-3 weeks. Champions League matches take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so be sure to have your wagers ready to go. As you might expect, the finale takes place on a Saturday. For reasons of their own, UEFA likes to tinker with details. For the 2018/19 season, those changes can be found in the kick-off times. Below is an overview of the updated start times:

  • Match days for UEFA Champions League:
    Tuesdays and Wednesdays
  • Match start time:
    21:00 CET
  • Group Phases:
    Tuesdays: 8 matches
    Wednesday: 8 matches
  • Knockout Phases:
Round of 16: 4 Tuesday matches + 4 Wednesday matches

Do I need previous knowledge to be able to bet on the Champions League?

As with all sports, some background knowledge is beneficial. Keep in mind, the Champions League has both a group and knockout phase. If you’re not sure what that means, re-read the sections above or refer to an online resource. A country can demonstrate its soccer dominance in the Champions League. For our true beginner friends out there, let’s step back and look at the biggest headlines:

  • 16 of the 32 teams from group play come from 4 countries-
    England, Italy, Germany and Spain
  • The four power countries have won 49 of the 63 finals
  • Spain’s 18 titles are more than the Netherlands, Portugal, France, Romania, Scotland and Serbia combined (14)

The table below shows that of all teams with multiple Champions League victories, only two clubs came from outside of the 4 power countries. Well done, Ajax Amsterdam and Benfica Lisbon.
