Leipzig challenges Wolfsburg
In the last game of the seventh round of German Bundesliga the million team of Wolfsburg is playing against the also financially very strong promoted team Leipzig, who is one of the positive surprises of this young season so far. Kick-off is on Sunday at Volkswagen Arena at 5.30 PM.
Current form Vfl Wolfsburg
Last season can be titled as “Wolfsburg’s plague year”. They missed international play. 2016/2017 Vfl is struggling again, even though they signed some good new players. They have not been able to win any of their last five games, so coach Dieter Hecking’s job is not the safest anymore. The only win this season was the season opener success against FC Augsburg (2:0). Since then Wolfsburg is especially struggling offensively. DFB-national team striker Mario Gomez also hasn’t been able to change that fact. Best proof for that is that three of Wolfsburg’s six games ended in a goalless draw. It happened against Hoffenheim, Cologne and FSV Mainz. Incredible but true: Wolfsburg currently is the third weakest offensive team together with Darmstadt. Additionally the Hecking-Eleven was the first team that was beaten by SV Werder Bremen (2:1). Wolfburg also had to suffer a 5:1 blowout in front of their home crowd against Borussia Dortmund. Considering that the draw against Mainz in the last round can be seen as a success, even though it doesn’t match the management’s expectations of course. Furthermore Sunday’s opponent promoted team Leipzig is a very compact team.
Current form RB Leipzig
Red Bull gives you wings – the company’s slogan of club boss Dietrich Mateschitz couldn’t be more fitting at the moment for Leipzig. After six rounds new coach Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team is ranked fifth. Furthermore Leipzig has been undefeated since the elimination of the cup against Dynamo Dresden (6:7 after penalty shoot-out). Consequently they are one of very few teams without a loss in league play. Lastly they celebrated a close but deserved 2:1 victory over FC Augsburg. The impressive 1:0 success against Dortmund proves that Leipzig is able to compete with the biggest teams of the league. Leipzig performs really well in away games, which is another advantage for Sunday’s game against Wolfsburg. Apart from the win in Dortmund Red Bull drew in Hoffenheim (2:2) and in Cologne (1:1). The Hasenhüttl-eleven is the first promoted team, which is still unbeaten after six games. Leipzig probably diesn’t have good memories about their last game against Wolfsburg though. Vfl won the cup game 2:0. One of Leipzig’s problems in close games may be their lack of experience. The average age of the starting eleven against Augsburg was only 23.5 years.
Youth is trump - that may be Leipzig’s current motto. An away game in Wolfsburg is not an easy task, even if Wolfsburg has been struggling lately. We still believe that the Hecking-Elven will be able to score against the promoted team. Our recommendation: Tip X.
