Switzerland versus European Champion Portugal
Switzerland plays against European champion Portugal, which will be their immediate competitor for first place in Group B. The two teams last played each other at the EURO 2008 in Switzerland, where Switzerland was able to win 2:0. An exciting game can be expected at the start of group B. Kick-off is Tuesday in Switzerland at 8.45 PM.
Current form Switzerland
Switzerland played a solid EURO 2016 and they are on track of becoming one of Europes top football nations. In France they made it into the round of 16, where they were defeated by Poland after a penalty shoot-out. Coach Petkovic has an established team that’s full of legionnaires in top leagues. They have great players on every position with a possible back up as well. One setback is that midfielder Xherdan Shaquiri will miss the game. The player from Stoke City is out for a couple of weeks due to an injured calf. He will be replaced by Renato Steffen from 1. FC Basel. Switzerland will need a good game by their goal keeper Yann Sommer against Portugal. Sommer was voted Switzerland’s footballer of the year. On offense Switzerland trusts Breel Embolo from FC Schalke 04, but Haris Seferovic also is likely to score a goal at any time. It will come down to how intelligent Switzerland can play against Portugal.
Current form Portugal
Portugal also misses its super star. Ronaldo is not fit yet after the knee injury he suffered in the final. Portugal played very disciplined at the EURO and they acted as a compact team, which they haven’t in the past. That lead to their biggest success yet. Instead of Ronaldo Nani and Quaresma are supposed to form the wings. Last test opponent before the World Cup qualification was Gibraltar last Thursday. Portugal sent them home with 5:0. Nani scored two goals and proved that he is in top shape. Two defenders were able to score as well. Pepe scored via head shot and Cancello made a right-foot shot. Switzerland will be the toughest opponent for Portugal in Group B. Hungary, Latvia, Faroe Islands and Andorra are all manageable opponents. It will be interesting to see, how much Ronaldo’s missing shows.
A close game can be expected. Both nations miss their top star, so it will come down to a good team effort even more. Our recommendation: Tip X.
