Can Mattersburg pass on the red lantern?
The third day of competition in the Austrian Bundesliga gives us the encounter between SV Mattersburg and SK Sturm Graz. Mattersburg coach Vastic is therefore facing the club, which he was most successful with as a player. Kick off is this Saturday at 4 pm.
Current form SV Mattersburg
The guys from Burgenland currently have bad luck stuck to them like glue. In this early stage of the season they are already facing the last place in the standings. Many experts saw the Vastic team as a potential relegation team before the season. Right now their theory seems to play out. Although the performances of Patrick Bürger and Co. don't necessarily reflect the standings. Because both in the first round against Altach, and in the match up against Austria Vienna in the second round Mattersburg wasn't only playing on their opponent's level, but especially against the Fink-Eleven was the better team for a long time. They scored for 1:0 and were in the lead after 45 minutes, but had to suffer a 1:3 in the end. Against Altach they also had to put up with a 0:1 because of a defensive fault that came late in the game. It's obvious what the team from Burgenland is lacking. They don't have a real goal getter on their team, who could turn possibilities into goals. Possible candidates like Markus Pink or Patrick Bürger are able to score from time to time, however they are not in their best shape (yet).
Current form Sturm Graz
The euphoria from the season start seems to already have faded in the capitol of Styria. After the celebrated 3:1 win in the opening match against Champion Red Bull Salzburg, the Foda-Eleven showed their well-known flaws against Ried in the second round. Sturm Graz wasn't aggressive enough in offense. Franco Foda might be to blame for that also, because he changed his team on several positions compared to the game against Salzburg. Not necessarily playerwise, but more regarding the roles the players were playing. Deni Alar for example was acting as a striker coming from behind. Actually one should think, that the German would want to find and form a group of guys that play well together as soon as possible, with all the new guys on the team. It will be interesting to see, whether fellow German Christian Schulz will see action against Mattersburg for the first time. The experienced player could bring stability into a defense, which seemed unsteady at times against Ried. Schulz might replace the young Christian Schoissengeyer. Stefan Hierländer would also love to debut in the starting eleven for Graz. However if Graz presents itself as weak as against Ried, it will be hard even against the bottom placed team and then it won't matter who is on the field.
Sturm Graz is struggling against defensive oriented opponents, as seen in the game against Ried. Mattersburg has sold itself short so far and is eager to put points on the slate for the first time this season. We assume that Mattersburg will be able to do that. Our recommendation for the first game of the third round: TIPP X
