Can Slovakia win again?
When the EURO contender Slovakia and Lithuania play against each other in the world cup qualification on Friday, the hosts are considered the favorite. The Baltic team already proved however that they can trouble a lot of opponents in football Europe. Kick-off is November 11 at 8.45 PM.
Current form Slovakia
One could call Slovakia’s results in the running world cup qualification mediocre so far. After a successful qualification for the EURO and the games in France, Slovakia’s expectations were high. But the team is lacking consistency. Very good performances are too often followed by weak ones. Examples are the 3:0 success against Scotland and the unlucky 0:1 loss to England at the beginning of the qualification compared to a meager performance against Slovenia (0:1). There is no consistency in the different parts of the team. While Slovakia has been struggling offensively against England, they have been firing against Scotland. Especially striker Robert Mak played very well against Scotland and scored two goals. He is supposed to score again against Lithuania. Mak was almost alone responsible for the win against the “Bravehearts”, and that even though he was playing in the midfield. The fact that Jan Kozak’s team has been playing very well at home in 2016 also gives hope. With the exception of the England game, Slovakia is undefeated at home and the goal from England was the only one they received in their stadium so far. Additionally Marek Hamsik is a world class player, who can decide a game by himself. He is the central figure of the Kozak-Eleven.
Current form Lithuania
The times in which Lithuania was the scapegoat for other football nations are over. The Baltic state has had a very positive development in the last couple of years. Single good results like the 2:2 against Slovenia prove that. Former professional player Edgars Jankauska’s team was also able to draw 1:1 against Scotland and against Malta they even won 2:0. So no one should underestimate Lithuania. Against Slovakia they will try again to act out of a solid defense. Additionally Lithuania should have some physical advantages over Kozak’s team. The roster itself speaks against the guests however as well as the home strength of Slovakia. Lithuania also had their best results in front of their home crowd. But the Jankauskas-Eleven is now undefeated for four games, because they also drew 0:0 against Poland in a friendly game. Unfortunately Lukas Spalvis, who plays in Portugal, won’t be able to play on Friday. That’s why Fredor Cernych is supposed to score goals. The wing player has been the most dangerous player of his team in the past three qualification games. He scored one goal per game on average.
Lithuania is a strong team at home, but away they have been struggling lately. Additionally Slovakia has the better players on their team, who also have more experience on top-level football. That’s why we are not counting on a surprise in this game. Our recommendation: Tip 1.
