The Champion opens the new season
It's the start of the 2016/2017 season in French Ligue 1. And the champion many times over is already seeing action on Friday, when PSG is playing SC Bastia. Roles are clearly defined in this match. Kick-off is August 12 at 8 PM.
Current form SC Bastia
The small club SC Bastia can only dream about the amount of money, that opponent PSG is able to spend on the transfer market. That's why experts expect the team from Northeast Corsica to end up on the bottom of the league and therefore facing relegation. One of the reasons for that is that the club already had trouble financially obtaining the license for this season. Correspondingly the 10th of last season was forced to let a couple of regular players go, in order to secure gaming operations. Francois Kamano for example was sold to Bordeaux and Floyd Ayité to FC Fulham. That naturally hurts the quality of the team and therefore the quality of play. While there is still some potential on the team in offense, the defense seems to be the weakness for Bastia. Coach Francois Ciccolini hopes that the Moroccan-French Abdelhamid El Kaoutari, who is a loan from Serie-A club Palermo, brings much needed stability to defense. Apart from that Bastia is relying on a balanced mixed of young and hungry players and those who have experience in the league. It'll be more than a hard task to score against PSG in the opening round though.
Current form Paris St. Germain
PSG is the clear favorite for the new 2016/2017 season, after they won every national title there is to win last season. Additionally Paris was able to score some top-class players on the transfer market. Above all one has to mention the new coach Unai Emery. The Argentinian is replacing Laurent Blanc, who didn't survive the Champion's League exit. Player wise Paris recently signed Jesé from Real Madrid. Top performers like Blaise Matuidi or Marco Veratti could be kept. For the defensive midfield PSG added Polish Grzegorz Krychowiak who is supposed to give the team more quality and stability on defense. Paris also signed Hatem Ben Arfa from league competitor Nice. The Belgian Thomas Meunier, who also played in the 2016 Euro, is supposed to enhance defense. In a test match PSG was able to beat Real Madrid 3:1, which proves that they are an international title contender as well. It will be interesting to see how PSG can compensate the leave of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and how soon the players will buy into the new coach's system.
PSG didn't want radical changes, but they focused on adding quality to their team over the summer. Bastia on the other hand had to let their best player go. So anything but a clear victory of the reigning champion would be a surprise. Paris should not make the mistake of underestimating their opponent however. Our recommendation: Tipp 2.
