The defending champion steps in

This Wednesday reigning champion Real Madrid starts the mission of defending the title. The mission starts with a home game against Sporting Lisbon. Real of course is the favorite in this game. Kick-off at Estadio Bernabeu is September 14 at 8.45 PM.

Current form Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane’s team warmed up nicely last weekend for the Chmapions League season 2016/2017. In the third round of the new La Liga season CA Osasuna got to feel the offensive power of Madrid. Real won impressively with 5:2. More important than the win itself might be the fact that European champion and world footballer Christiano Ronaldo seems to be back to a 100% after his injury. The game against Sporting will surely be special for him, after all that’s the club where he received his football education. Real is still undefeated in the Spanish league. The also won against Celta Vigo (2:1) and Real Sociedad (3:0). So the Zinedane-Eleven starts into the Champions League season with the self-confidence of a league leader. But Osasuna was able to prove that Real’s defense is not unbeatable. Three received goals in three games is not too much, but it still comes down to one goal per game. The inside defense of Real is especially not well positioned when high balls are played. Last weekend Osasuna was able to score both goals after high balls.

Current form Sporting Lisbon

Sporting Lisbon is in a similar position in Portugal as Real Madrid in Spain. The club from the capital also is the cream of the crop in the league right now. They are leading the league with a maximum of twelve points after four rounds. Sporting also won their last game with a difference of three goals. But unlike Real they were able to prevent Moreirense from scoring a goal and won 3:0. In the third round Lisbon beat a big rival for the Portuguese championship FC Porto 2:1. Additionally they could celebrate wins against Pacos Ferreira (1:0) and Maritimo (2:0). So Jorge Jesus’ players should be bursting with self-confidence. The former Benfica Coach helped city rival Sporting to excel again after he took over. Unlike Real the Portuguese will miss an important defender. Outseide defender Jefferson is out due to a muscle injury and won’t be an option for Wednesday. Striker Lukas Spalvis will miss the game as well due to knee surgery. Additionally Sporting’s memories of games against Real are not very positive. They have met before in the group phase of Champions League and lost to the Spaniards. Those games were played fifteen years ago however.

Betting forecast

The roles are clearly defined for this duel. Real Madrid once again is one of the top favorites for the Champions League title and they will try everything in order to make the first step in this direction with a win in the first game. Sporting will have to outdo themselves in order to steal a point in Madrid. Our recommendation: Tip 1.
