It’s almost a little wonder that Iceland is qualified for the EURO 2016. The team from northern Europe is the smallest country that is qualified for the final rounds. At the beginning Portugal is waiting for them at the group F. We will see if the beginners can keep up with the experienced Portuguese. Kick – off on the 14th of June is at 9 p.m..
Current performance of Portugal
In the Portuguese squad there are two new champions league winners. Defence player Pepe and Superstar Christano Ronaldo have won with real Madrid lately. Nonetheless the fitness of the most expensive player in this tournament (market value 110 Mio. Euros) is questionable. Christiano Ronaldo has fought with some injuries lately. All eyes are also on the Bayern new entry Renato Sanchez. The 18 year old “wunderkind” changed to Munich lately for 45 Mio. Euros. In general the team from southern Europe has some excellent players in his squad. However at the latest test matches the team from Fernando Santos has been inconsistent. The latest friendly match against England has been lost with a score of 0:1. But before they have been able to celebrate victories against Norway (3:0) and even Belgium (2:1). At the end of March they blamed themselves by losing against Bulgaria with a score of 0:1. The missing consistency could mean a disaster at the EURO for Portugal. However Ronaldo & Co definitely can handle the group stage.
Current performance of Iceland
About 220.000 habitants are living in Iceland. Handball is the national sport number one. However in the last year soccer had catch up due to the success of the national team. The Coach Lars Lagerbäck from Sweden has been able to form a group. At the EURO Qualification they have been able to fix the second position of the difficult group A and therefore have beaten teams like the Netherlands and Turkey. Only the Czech Republic has been better and has won the group. In addition they not only have beaten the Netherlands at home also away they have left the playfield as winner. The team from Iceland lives especially from the strong collective. For the finesse is player Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City responsible. With 11 Mio Euros he is the most expensive player in Iceland. However the latest test matches could have been also better. They have lost the match on the 24th of March against Denmark with a score of 1:2. Only a few days later they have beaten the ex-European champions from Greece with a score of 3:2. On the 1st of June they had to suffer a defeat against Norway with a score of 2:3. At the match against Portugal, Iceland is the clear outsider.
