Basel is fighting for ground
Just like Ludogorets Razgrad in the parallel game Basel needs to deliver on Monday in Champions League group A. A loss would make all dreams of elimination rounds pop early. Paris St. Germain is a very hard opponent however. Kick-off is October 19 at 8.45.
Current form Paris St.Germain
After a mediocre start into the season PSG seems to have picked up speed. Lastly they beat possible relegation team AS Nancy 2:1. Before that they won against Girodins Bordeaux 2:0. In total Paris is now undefeated for three games in a row, because they also beat Ludogorets Razgrad easily 3:1 on the second Champions League game day. The system of new coach Unai Emery seems to work slowely but surely. Additionally the coach can currently count on a real goal getter, who almost makes people forget that superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic has left the club. We are talking about Edinson Cavani, who scored an unbelievable nine goals in eight league games and therefore is one of the most dangerous offensive players world wide right now. Against Basel only midfielder Javier Pastore is not fit. Additionally PSG is almost invincible internationally in front of their home crowd. The Frenchmen only lost one of their last 41 (!) home games in international club competitions. Apart from Cavani the stable defense is one of Paris’ strengths. Currently they have received the least goals behind Nice in French Ligue 1.
Current form FC Basel
The times when FC Basel was able to beat Europe’s top clubs seem to have passed. While they have been able to beat Manchester United a couple of years ago they are now lagging behind in Champions League. In the Swiss league everything is going as planned however. Whoever wants the title in the Super League this season will have to beat Urs Fischer’s team. Basel easily won against FC Luzern last weekend and they now have almost twice as many points as their first pursuer in the ranking from Lausanne. The only point loss of Basel this season came in the tenth round when they drew 1:1 against FC Thun. Against Paris St. Germain the defense of the Swiss traditional club will be challenged more than in the league however. So it’s good that Fischer will be able to count on all of his defensive players. Additionally Basel can be hopeful, because they have a positive balance against French clubs. Basel was able to win 4 out of 11 games against French teams. They drew four times and lost three games. They have not been able to win an away game though and only drew twice then. So it will be really hard for Basel at Parc de Prince.
Similar signs as in the parallel game. Nationally Basel is the cream of the crops, but internationally they are good average at best. A won point in Paris would be a treat for Basel, but we don’t believe that the Swiss will be able to achieve that. That’s why we are counting on a home win of the Frenchmen. Our recommendation: Tip 1.
