A smash hit on Thursday
The second day of the World Championship qualifications in Europe has a real treat in store. On Thursday Italy plays against Spain in group G. Both teams played against each other in the Euro 16 elimination round. Kick-off is October 6 at 8.45 PM.
Current form Italy
The start was successful. Not more and not less. That’s how one can summarize Italy’s start into the qualification for the World Championship 2018 in Russia. They beat Isreal away 3:1, but they didn’t perform very well in that game. A few days before they lost a friendly game against France 1:3. So it showed that they are struggling against offensively strong opponents. Italy’s roster is full of super starts though. Unfortunately coach Gianpiero Ventura, who will only be on the bench for the third time, will miss the one or other important player against Spain. Defensive old hand Giorgio Chiellini for example saw yellow-red against Israel and so the Juventus player won’t play on Thursday. One problem for Italy could become scoring goals. None of the strikers on the team has been very accurate this season so far. The players of the world champion from 2006 should have good memories of the opponent however. At the EURO in France they surprisingly beat Spain 2:0 in the round of the top 16. They played very stable defense and fast offense. There has been another coach on the bench then however, namely Antonio Conte, who is now coaching Chelsea.
Current form Spain
Unlike Italy Spain performed really well in their first qualification game. Even though their opponent Liechtenstein wasn’t a football force, the result of 8:0 is still impressive. One parallel to Italy: Spain is also trusting a new man on the sideline since after the EURO. National team coach Julen Lotepgegui likes to play an offensive style of football, which was obvious against Liechtenstein. The biggest advantage for Spain is the number of players on their team, who are likely to score a goal. One could mention Diego Costa for example, who is currently the leading scorer of the Premier League, or Davis Silva from Manchester United and Nolito. Before the game against Liechtenstein Spain gained self-confidence in a friendly match against then first ranked Belgium. They won 2:0. In summary they won their last two games with a goal ratio of 10:0, which also speaks for the defense of Spain. The direct results between Italy and Spain speak for Italy though. They won 15 out of 44 games. Spain “only” won 12 times.
It should be a very close game. The last results and performances speak for Spain, while Italy was able to win the last game between the two teams. Additionally Italy can count on home court advantage on Thursday, which is an important factor in games like these. We still believe that Spain will be able to make up for the loss in the EURO. Our recommendation: Tip 2.
