This rounds' top game
It's the game of games in the Austrian Bundesliga and it's coming up this Sunday. It's time for the 318th derby between Austria and city rival Rapid Vienna. The team in green-white has the goal to catch up point wise with the "Violets". Kick-off is August 7 at 4.30 PM.
Current form Austria Wien
It couldn't work out much better for the team of Coach Thorsten Fink in this early stage of the season. Both against St. Pölten (2:1), and against Mattersburg (3:1) the Violets came out on top. The reward: The Austria from Vienna is smiling down from the top of the league's standings. They don't have much reason to smile in the Europe League though. They had to endure a bitter 0:1 loss at home against the weaker estimated team of Spartak Trnava from Slovakia. Austria had to make up for that in the return leg away during the week. And they barely succeeded. Vienna only won in the penalty shoot-out against the Slovaks. The Fink-Eleven especially had problems creating goal-scoring chances. That might be easier against Rapid, because the archrival is not acting as defensively as the team from Slovakia. Additionally Austria keeps making fatal mistakes in defense however. Although they won against St. Pölten and Mattersburg they could only convince performance wise in certain stages of the games. Therefore they are going to have to pick it up against Rapid.
Current form Rapid Wien
They were cheering happily in Vienna-Hütteldorf after the season's opener against SV Ried. The team from Vienna won that game easily 5:0 and showed great determination and fast paced play in offense. Then against Altach one could see an old problem of Rapid. They often struggle against the so-called "Small teams" of the league. In the end they had to surrender a 0:1 loss. in the Europe-League-Qualification game against Torpedo Zhodino they also only managed a meager 0:0. This result further confirms the aforementioned problem. Additionally Coach Mike Büskens has to pass on Mate Jelic at the moment, and therefore lacks one offensive alternative. In order to compensate that, Rapid signed the Georgian Giorgi Kvilitaia during the week, who was the top scorer of the Goergian League last season. We will see, if he'll already see action in the derby. After all Rapid made it into the Europe-League Play-off thanks to a confident home win against Zhodino on Thursday. A "feat" that Austria Vienna was also able to master, but it should push Rapid even more, since their win was so high.
Rapid wants to make up for the disgrace in Altach. The team in green and white probably has more quality playerwise but particularly a broader squad. On the other hand Austria has been flawless in the Bundesliga so far. A fact that should give the Fink-Eleven a lift. We are still counting on a narrow victory of Rapid though. Therefore our recommendation: Tipp 2.
