Rapid wants to repeat their coup
After Rapid made it out of the group phase in Europe League last year, they want to be similarly successful this season. On Thursday Slovak Double-winner Trencin is in their way. Kick-off is August 18 at 9.05 PM.
Current form AS Trencin
Last season was one of the most successful in club history. They managed to win the cup title as well as the championship and so got a ticket to Champions League qualification. There they were barely defeated in the third round by Warsaw with a total score of 0:1. The team seems to not cope so well with the double burden. In the Slovak league they are currently only on 8th place after 5 rounds, mainly because of three losses at the beginning of the season. Trencin was able to win their last game with 3:2 against Dunajska Streda though. That should give them some self-confidence for the duel against Rapid Vienna. One disadvantage for the Slovaks is their lack of international playing experience. While Rapid was playing in international competition in recent years, it is the first time for Trencin. Additionally the team is very young. No player on the roster is older than 27. A fact that can turn into a disadvantage in close international games, like the matches against Warsaw showed.
Current form Rapid Vienna
A lot speaks for the Austrian record champion before this match, especially their current form. They were able to score 3 points in all of their last 3 games and they did so in a persuading manner. First they eliminated Belorussian Torpedo Zhodino with 3:0, after they drew 0:0 in Belarus, then they celebrated a 4:1 victory in the derby at Austria Vienna and then they easily won 4:0 against Admira. Summarized that means a second place in the Austrian Bundesliga and a flawless defensive performance in international competition. Additionally Coach Mike Büskens has a very broad roster and can compensate possible injuries better than Trencin. The only little problem area are the strikers. Rapid has Tomi, Maximilian Entrup and Joelinton at their disposal. But Tomi hardly sees any action, mainly because he is only 19 years old. Two other alternatives are Jelic and Kvilitaia are injured at the moment and won’t be able to play on Thursday. Rapid is the clear favorite nevertheless. Another trump could be their midfield play. Icelandic new signee Arnor Traustasson is also ready to play again after his injury.
If Rapid wants to make it into Europe League, Trencin shouldn’t be an obstacle. The Austrian record champion is playing too safely right now and their Slovak opponent’s performances are very unstable. We therefore believe that Rapid will be able to lay foundation on Thursday already for their going up. Our recommendation: Tipp 2.
