The top matches of the qualification round part one
This match up might as well have been one in the group phase of the Champions League. We are talking about Villareal versus AS Monaco. It’s hard to tell who the favorite is in that game. Kick-off is Wednesday at 8.45 PM.
Current form FC Villareal
The “yellow submarine”, that’s how Villareal is called in Spain, was the first challenger of the big three in Spain last season. They ended up on 4th place behind Barcelona, Real and Atlético and so secured a ticket for Champions-League-Qualification. In the fight for group phase they are now facing Monaco. Contrary to the French team Villareal hasn’t started league play yet, which could be a little disadvantage. Additionally they have a new coach, namely Fran Escribá. It will be interesting to see, whether team already bought into his style of play. In order to be competitive internationally, a few players have been added to the roster. Roberto Soriano from Sampdoria Genua joined the team, as well as Alfred N’Diaye from Betis Sevilla, who cost 8 million Euros. Denis Cheryshev also got a fixed contract. The Russian will miss Wednesday’s game due to injury though. The same goes for Jonathan Dos Santos. One advantage for Villareal is the home court advantage. Last season they hardly could be beat in El Madrigal. On offense the Spanish team is counting on goals from Cedric Bakambou again, who played really well last season, especially internationally.
Current Form AS Monaco
As mentioned the club from the Principality already started their season. Last weekend they faced Guingamp in French Ligue 1. The Monegasques didn’t perform well at all though and had to be content with a 2:2 draw in the end. Coach Leonardo was resting a couple of key players in sight of the match against Villareal however. Additionally top striker Radamel Falcao was out due to a minor injury. He should be back for the game on Wednesday. The draw against Guingamp might have brought some uncertainty into the team. It still was an important game for moral, after they came back from a 0:2. Internationally the Monegasques acted confident so far. In the third qualification round they were able to eliminate a strong Fenerbahce team, even though they lost the game in Istanbul with 1:2. Monaco’s biggest advantage will be that it will be their third competitive game this season, while Villareal only played test matches so far.
A close game, with slight advantages for Villareal. The Escribá-Eleven is a power in front of their home crowd. Monaco has the match practice on high competitive level going for them. The injured players on the Spanish team might also be an advantage for Monaco. Our recommendation: Tipp X.
