The top matches of the qualification round part two
Apart from the game between Villareal and Monaco it’s mainly the match of FC Porto and AS Roma that draws attention in the Champions-League-Playoff. Two top clubs are fighting for a spot in the group phase. Kick-off is Wednesday at 8.45 PM.
Current form FC Porto
The top club from Portugal started strongly as expected in the new season. Last Friday they easily beat Rio Ave 3:1, which should have boosted their self-confidence for the duel with Rome. Contrary to last season Porto strengthened the team on almost every position. They signed Goalie José Sá, on defense they are counting on inside defender Felipe, who came from Sao Paulo. On the position of left defender two new players are fighting for playing time, namely Miguel Layún (from Watford) and Alex Telles (from Galatasaray). As a striker coach Nuno Espírito trusts youngster André Silva, who was promoted from the second team and who already was able to score a goal in his first game. Behind him another new signee is in line with Laurent Depoitre. All in all the Portuguese club gained quality and didn’t have to let too many key players go. Additionally they have a good mixture of experience and youthful easiness.
Current form AS Roma
Contrary to FC Porto the “Romans” haven’t started the Serie-A season yet. In the new season they want to challenge champion Juventus Turin as much as possible. The first task of the 2016/2017 is to qualify for Champions League though. But Coach Luciano Spalletti has personality problems before the game against FC Porto. Wojciech Szczesny, a loan from FC Arsenal, is out with thigh problems. New hire Alisson will defend the goal instead of him. Antonio Rüdiger, Mário Ruí and Abdullahi Nura are out with ACL problems. This offseason AS Roma signed players, which were a loan last season. Examples are Sallah, Dzeko and Rüdiger. All in all the Spalletti-Eleven has a good team, which is a title contender after Juventus Turin in Italy. Also in the 180 minutes against FC Porto the Italians are the slight favorite. In their test matches the “Romans” performed fair to middling. They won 2:1 against FC Liverpool, but lost bitterly with 0:3 against FC Barcelona.
Roma has the stronger roster, but Porto already has more matches under their wings and they have the home court advantage. Additionally Porto can play with their strongest eleven. We are expecting a close game, which will end in a draw. Our recommendation: Tipp X.
