A classic with clear signs
The German Bundesliga has a couple of top duels in store on Saturday. For football romantics at least one of these games is the one between FC Bayern Munich and Schalke 04. Fans will only get to see one top club in this game, because Schalke is falling way short of their expectations. Kick-off is February 4 at 5.30 PM.
FC Bayern Munich
- home court advantage
- won first duel of the season
- won last six league games in a row
FC Schalke 04
- opponent not always steady on defense
- can bet on counter attacks in away game
Current form FC Bayern Munich
Even though the record champion is currently leading the league, they don't seem to be untouchable. The games after the winter break seem to be prove of that. Munich was only able to score the deciding goal in the last minute against Freiburg. In the duel against Bremen two fast goals were responsible for the win. Both games ended 2:1 for the favorite, but especially Bremen had a good chance to steal points from the Ancelotti-Eleven. Considering that Bayern won the first game of the season against Werder 6:0 shows that Bayern is currently not on the top of their game. Neuer & Co can still be hopeful for Saturday, after all they also won the first duel against Schalke this season 2:0. So in total the record of Munich is still very impressive. They won their last six league games and haven't even received a goal in three of them. They also only lost six of 46 home games against Schalke. FC Bayern Munich hasn't lost the last five direct duels (home or away), won three times against Schalke and drew in two games. Tiago and Franck Ribery might be out for a while though.
Current form Schalke 04
Numbers and statistics don't lie. So it's almost a shame what's going on in Gelsenkirchen. Even though Schalke has the third most expensive roster of the league and signed some strong players during the summer, they can't seem to bring the individual players' quality on the court. So it's seems as though it's not a problem of lacking quality, but a lack of will. Schalke was only able to celebrate a lucky win against possible relegation team Ingolstadt in the last minute. Against a defensively steady Eintracht Frankfurt they weren't able to win anymore, but even lost 0:1. So coach Weinzierl is getting more and more under pressure. It's interesting that Schalke's current hope is not an expensive new signee from the summer, but Guido Burgstaller, who has been playing in the second league until a couple of weeks ago. The Austrian joined Schalke in the winter and he scored the winning goal against Ingolstadt and also was one of the more active players against Frankfurt. The win against the "Schanzer" was the only one in the last five games. Even though the "Knappen" have to battle a lot of injuries (Embolo, Baba, Coke, Uchida, Meyer, Di Santo, Huntelaar), they lack way more than player resources. So Schalke shouldn't have too high hopes against Bayern, after all they have only won one single away game this season.
If they go into the game against Bayern with the same attitude as they did against Frankfurt, Schalke will go to the dogs. Thanks to the currently rather stolid game of Bayern, Schalke probably doesn't have to fear a debacle, but we still believe that the game will end in a home win for the Ancelotti-Eleven. Our recommendation therefore: Tip 1.
