Can Cologne pull off sensation?
This Saturday one of the biggest surprises of the German Bundesliga so far is playing against the record champion. We are talking about the duel between bayern Munich and 1. FC Cologne. The hosts want to keep their good start into the season going. Kick-of is October 1 at 3.30 PM.
Current form FC Bayern Munich
In national competition new coach Carlo Ancelotti’s team has been flawless so far. They are undefeated in cup as well as in a total of fve Bundesliga games. Additionally they were able to win the German Supercup. This past week Bayern got beaten internationally though. They lost in Madrid against Athlético 0:1. So it seems as though the league program hasn’t been the toughest one for Lewandowski and Co. They haven’t played against the strongest team in the Bundesliga yet. While Bayern was destroying their opponents in the beginning of the season (they beat Werder Bremen 6:0 for example), they now also has the one or other lucky win. The 2:0 against Schalke for example was only fixated in the last minutes of the game, just like the 1:0 victory over HSV. Bayern only really dominated again against Hertha BSC, when they beat them 3:0. It’s positive though that Munich was able to win their last five games against Cologne with an impressive goal ratio of 15:2. In front of their home crowd Munich performed especially well (4:0 and 4:1).
Current form 1. FC Cologne
Looking at the ranking this game can easily be titled the top match of the round. The current leader is playing the third ranked team after all. Even though Cologne is not the first challenger of Munich anymore after they drew against Leipzig (1:1), they still proved that they can compete with the top teams of the league. They drew 0:0 against Wolfsburg for example and were the better team in this game. Additionally the Stöger-Eleven can be compared to Athlético Madrid. Just like the Spaniards Cologne also counts on continuity in management and they don’t need much ball possession in order to be successful. They are playing a steady defense and like to play a fast transition game. Cologne also performed really well in their last away game. They beat currently last ranked Schalke 04 3:1. Tactically the “Stöger System” is very variable. That’s why a surprise in Munich may be possible, even though Cologne didn’t succeed in their last couple of games at Allianz Arena. Between 1998 and 2010 Cologne only lost one of eight games in Munich however.
Playing wise Bayern is stronger, but their opponent is currently in top shape. Cologne hasn’t lost any competitive game yet. We still believe that Munich wants to make up for the loss against Madrid and therefore will win against Cologne. Our recommendation: Tip 1.
