Barcelona starts league season
Together with Italian Serie A the Spanish Primera División is going into the first of 38 rounds this weekend. Defending champion FC Barcelona is playing Betis Sevilla in their season opener and they shouldn’t have much of a problem against them. Kick-off is Saturday at 6.15 PM.
Current form FC Barcelona
It’s always hard to foresee a team’s form before the season starts. The test matches don’t show a uniform picture of Barcelona. They lost against Liverpool 1:4, but won against Leicester City 4:2 for example. After they almost gambled away a comfortable lead last season, a good start into the new season is crucial. The first couple of competitive games already showed, that Barcelona is a big title contender again. Europe-League champion FC Sevilla didn’t stand a chance in the supercup. Messi and Co. won 2:0 away and in front of their crowd they managed a 3:0 victory. And all that without one of the biggest superstars. Neymar is currently at the Olympics in Rio and won’t play on Saturday. Goal keeper Marc André ter Stegen also won’t be available for the season opener. That could be a problem, considering that Claudio Bravo will transfer to Manchester City. Transferwise Barcelona was counting on youth this summer. They signed Samuel Umtiti (22), Lucas Digne (23) and André Gomes (23). On the other hand older players like Vermaelen (30) and Dani Alves (33) were let go.
Current form Betis Sevilla
Gustavo Poyet’s team will once again fight for points in another part of the league table compared to their opponent Barcelona. The game against the defending champion will be a first severe test for Betis that finished 10th last season. It will show, whether they will be able to top that this year. The team was strengthened during the summer. On defense they signed Alissa Mandi from Reims, Felipe Gutíerrez came from Twente Eschede for the central midfield. Sevilla also expects a lot from Charlie Musonda Junior, who is a loan from Chelsea. He is supposed to push tempo on the left flank. With Matías Nahuel another forward was signed from FC Villareal. Antonio Sanabria is supposed to score the needed goals. The 20-year-old from Paraguay joined team from AS Rome. All in all one can say that Sevilla should be stronger on each position this year. At least there is more quality on every part of the team now. Against Barcelona they are still the underdog, also because they haven’t had a competitive game this year in contrast to FC Barcelona. Additionally they lost against the defending champion twice in the 2015/2016 season, 0:2 at home and 0:4 at Camp Nou.
Even though Betis Sevilla strengthend their team and got rid of “relics” like Raffael van der Vaart, they shouldn’t be able to score against FC Barcelona. The Catalans were acting very confidently against Sevilla and in addition the Luis Enrique Eleven can count on their home court advantage. Our recommendation: Tipp 1.
