Barcelona needs to play against Bilbao
Both teams want to score on Saturday in the duel between currently second ranked Barcelona and seventh Bilbao. Barcelona needs points in the fight for the lead in the rankings, Bilbao needs them in order to secure a starting spot in international competition. Kick-off at Camp Nou is February 4 at 4.15 PM.
- home court advantage
- considerably stronger on offense
- won against opponent twice in 2016/2017
- undefeated for the last five games
- opponent's double burden
Current form FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona's season is marked with clear victories as well as a few slips, which could be deciding in the fight against Real Madrid. Currently Luis Enrique's team is four points behind their arch rival, who actually has played one game less. At least the Catalans were able to surpass FC Sevilla, who have been in second playce for a while. Against their city rival Barcelona also slipped last weekend. After all they only drew against Betis Sevilla. This was the eighth out of 20 games that Barcelona wasn't able to win in the league. This is quite a high number for the club, that's used to success. Before the draw against Betis Barcelona was able to clearly win against Eibar (4:0) and Las Palmas (5:0) though. Additionally Barcelona gained self confidence past Wednesday, when they beat Atlético Matdrid away 2:1 in the Copa del Rey. It's very likely that they will make it to the final now. Slowly but steadily Barcelona also seems to find their home strength again at Camp Nou. They won their last two home games after only drawing in the two games before. It's questionable whether captain Andrés Iniesta will play on the weekend. The midfield strategic was rested in the cup. Digne and Busquets are also injured.
Current form Athletic Bilbao
The team from the Basque country are currently two points away from a Europe-League spot. They want to make up this deficit sooner than later. The game in Barcelona is not an easy task for that, but a surprise doesn't seem impossible either. First because Barcelona hasn't always been flawless at home this season. They lost against promoted team Alavés 1:2 for example. Second because Bilbao finally was able to win again last weekend. Possible relegation team Sporting Gijon was beat 2:1. Before that Bilbao achieved a draw against Atlético Madrid. They probably weren't very satisfied with the 0:0 against Leganes. Another advantage for Ernesto Valverde's team is the fact, that they didn't have to play during the week in the cup, but they were able to regenerate and focus on the game against Barcelona. Bilbao already got eliminated from the cup in the quarterfinals by Barcelona. The total score of both games was 3:4. Bilbao was able to win their home game 2:1 though. In total the season record speaks against Bilbao however. The lost the second cup game 1:3 and the first league game against Barcelona 0:1 this season. Unlike Luis Enrique Ernesto Valverde is able to use the whole roster on Saturday.
A close game can be expected. Bilbao is undefeated for the past five games now, FC Barcelona has to defend an even more impressive series, but they are also battling with the double burden. We still believe that it's going to be a close home win for the Catalans. Our recommendation: Tip 1.
