Basel plays in London
The second game day of Champions League group A has a difficult task in store for Swiss serial champion FC Basel. We are talking about the game at Emirates Stadium against FC Arsenal. This game is particularly exciting, because group A doesn’t have a sole leader yet. Kick-off is Wednesday at 8.45 PM.
Current form FC Arsenal
Everything is great at the “Gunners” from London. They gave their star coach Arsene Wenger a 3:0 win over city rival FC Chelsea for his 20 year anniversary last weekend. One can see that the Londoners don’t have to deal with so many injured players anymore. The only defensive player on the injured list right now is German national team player Per Mertesacker. Therefore Arsenal’s defense has been much better lately. Apart from the 3:0 against Chelsea, Arsenal also beat Nottingham in the Cup (4:0) and in Premier League against promoted team Hull City (4:1). With only one received goal in the last three competitive games Arsenal is currently one of the best defensive teams in Premier League. On offense Arsene Wenger misses Danny Wellbeck and Aaron Ramsey, but this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. After all Arsenal has a lot of dangerous players on their team. Five different offensive players already scored two or more goals this season. Additionally the history of games between those two teams favors the Londoners. The “Gunners” have won all of their 12 games against teams from Switzerland so far. Arsenal also hasn’t lost a game at home anymore this season since the season opener against Liverpool.
Current form FC Basel
We already discussed the main problem of the Swiss club before the first game of the Champions League group phase. The team from Basel is lacking competition nationally so that the weaknesses of the team only become obvious in international play. Nevertheless Urs Fischer’s team is in great shape again this season. They won against St. Gallen with 3:1, even though key players like Bikir Bjarnasson or Seydou Doumbia only played shortly and were rested for the game against Arsenal. Additionally Marc Janko might come back against Arsenal after his injury. It’s interesting that the Swiss champion seems to really like playing away games. All of their last three competitive games were away games and they were all won. The results were 3:1 against St. Gallen, 2:1 against Lausanne and 1:0 against FC Zug. Unlike Arsenal Basel is still undefeated in the 2016/2017 season. Unfortunately the results against English teams haven’t been great in the past. Basel only was able to win one of twelve games. They are hopeful though that Janko will be back and so the whole team would be ready to play.
Basel might be in top form, but Arsenal can’t really be compared to St. Gallen or Lausanne. The 1:1 draw at home against Ludogorets shows that Basel has problems internationally. Arsenal on the other hand stole a point in Paris when they drew against the group favorite PSG. That’s why we believe in a home win by the “Gunners”. Our recommendation: Tip 1.
