Difficult task for the league leader
Will there be a change in Italian football? Currently it looks like it, because SSC Napoli is leading the league in front of defending champion Juventus Turin. But in the fifth round a hard opponent awaits Napoli. They have to play in Genoa. Kick-off is Wednesday at 8.45 PM.
Current form FC Genoa
Three rounds – six points. That’s the result of the currently seventh ranked team from Genoa. So the mood of Ivan Juric’s team could be unclouded, if there wasn’t the loss in the last round against US Sassuolo (0:2). The result could have been a different one against the Europe-League starter. After all Genoa had seven great chances and also had more ball possession than their opponent, but they weren’t able to convert that into goals. They weren’t as efficient as in the games before. In the two games before the game in Sassuolo Genoa scored six goals. They won 3:1 against Crotone and in the season opener against Cagliari. The Juric team wasn’t able to show the variability on offense from those two games in the loss to Sassuolo. Those six goals namely were scored by five different players. Against Sassuolo the offensive line of Genoa appeared predictable despite some chances. Additionally an important player from the defensive midfield will miss the game against Napoli. Miguel Veloso saw the yellow card twice in a span of a couple of minutes in the game against Sassuolo and so the Portuguese is suspended for Wednesday’s game.
Current form SSC Napoli
The team from the South of Italy is acting in top form right now. After a meagre season opener against promoted team Delfino Pescara (2:2), Maurizio Sarri’s team braced themselves and they have not lost a game since then. They celebrated wins nationally against Milan (4:2), Palermo (3:0) and FC Bologna (3:1). They also played well internationally and won at the start of the Champions-League-Season in Kiew (2:1). In the Ukraine the team also proved that they can cope with an early deficit. Napoli currently is especially persuasive on offense. They have the current top goal getter of the Serie a on their roster. Jose Callejón has scored 4 goals so far. The team as a total has scored 14 goals already, which makes almost an average of three goals per game. So it appears that they have compensated the leave of goal getter Gonzalo Higuaín pretty well. His replacement Arkardiusz Milik scored two goals against Bologna for example. Defensively Napoli still has room for improvement. Apart from the game against Palermo they have received at least one goal per game. So Napolis game is currently living off of dynamic wing players, who are dangerous to score themselves and find a great receiver for their passes in Milik.
Genoa will have to be aware of and contain the dangerous wings of the opponent. If they manage to do that, they would disarm Napoli. But Genoa’s self-confidence took a hit against Sassuolo. That’s why we are counting on a close win by SSC Napoli. Our recommendation: Tip 2.
