The top match of the first round

It’s the duel between last year’s third and fourth placed teams, when Borussia Mönchengladbach plays against Bayer Leverkusen. It’s hard to make out a favorite for this game. Kick-off is Saturday August 27 at 6.30 PM.

Current form Borussia Mönchengladbach

The “foals” seem to be in a good form this early in the season. One could witness that in the Playoff for Champions League, when they beat the Young Boys Bern away with 3:1 and now almost made it into Europe’s highest league. The return match is on August 24. In the German Cup Mönchengladbach didn’t perform as well though. They barely won 1:0 against Drochtersen. Coach André Schubert was resting most of his key players however. Playerwise there have been some changes over the summer. Granit Xhaka left the team for FC Arsenal. Christoph Kramer is supposed to replace him, who will have to play his former club in the season opener. One weapon for Gladbach could be high balls, since Andreas Christensen and Yannik Westergard are both dangerous inside defenders. Especially Christensen already showed his offensive potential last year. In preparation Borussia Mönchengladbach mainly played a lower class team, that’s why the results of those games don’t count much. Vfl Rhede was beat 15:0, Hessen Kassel 6:1 and St. Pauli 5:4.

Current form Bayer Leverkusen

Leverkusen seems to be fit for Champions League. Coach Roger Schmidt and Sports director Rudi Völler weren’t very active on the transfer market unlike other Bundesliga teams. They signed Julian Baumgartlinger for the midfield. Their most important signee is Hoffenheim-striker Kevin Volland though. Additionally they got an experienced number two in Ramazan Özcan. Just like him the other new players have to be seen as team supplements. And they will be necessary considering Schmidt’s intensive style of play. Just like Gladbach Leverkusen didn’t perform well in the first round of the German Cup. They barely won 2:1 against SC Hauenstein. In preparation Bayer won against Real Sociedad San Sebastian (2:0) and against AC Florence (3:1) amongst others. They were also able to draw 1:1 against Portuguese top club FC Porto. Some important players might miss the season opener due to injury though. Striker Stefan Kießling and Chicharito are hurt, just like Lars Bender, who came back with a slight injury from the Olympics. While there is still hope for the Mexican, Kießling and Bender will pretty sure be out.

Betting forecast

While Leverkusen was able to keep all of their important players, Gladbach lost their top player Xhaka. But the “foals” were very strong at home last season. We believe it’s going to be a close game without a winner in the end. Our recommendation therefore: Tip X.
