District derby is top game of the round
When the ninth round of the German Bundesliga continues on Saturday, it does so with a real smash hit. We are talking about the district derby between Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04. The starting positions of both teams promise an exciting game. Kick-off is October 29 at 6.30 PM.
Current form Borussia Dortmund
If one looks at the ranking Dortmund should be the clear favorite in this game. The Tuchel-Eleven has been struggling in the last couple of weeks though. They haven’t been able to win their last three league games. Lastly they had to be satisfied with draws against Ingolstadt (3:3) and Hertha BSC Berlin (1:1). Against Leverkusen they even lost 0:2. During the week they also didn’t perform very well and only made it to the next round of the German Cup after penalty shoot-out against second league team Union Berlin. Even though Borussia was dominating the game, they have not been able to translate this dominance into goals. The absence of top goal getter Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was obvious in some situations. Defensively the young team - Coach Tuchel was counting on a couple of young players, who would still be eligible to play on youth teams - also made a couple mistakes. Their results at home speak for Dortmund however. They are still undefeated in their home stadium. They also should be able to compensate the hard 120 minutes against Berlin thanks to a really deep roster. Additionally Dortmund has not lost any of the last three district derbies. Last season they drew 2:2 at Schalke and won 3:2 at home.
Current form FC Schalke 04
While opponent Dortmund is currently struggling, Schalke seems to be picking up speed. They won against 1. FC Nürnberg 3:2 in the second round of the DFB- Cup. They played especially well in the first half, before they almost let go of their lead (3:0) in the second half. The success in the cup was the fifth win in their last six competitive games. Schalke is undefeated for six games now and only had to be content with a 1:1 draw against Augsburg. Their top-level offensive line especially seems to have found a way out of the low. New player Konoplyanka was able to score two goals against Nürnberg. The wing game is one of Schalke’s biggest strengths at the moment. Defensively they fell back into old habits against Nürnberg time and again. The Weinzierl-Eleven is lacking compactness. The fact that they have not been able to win an away game in the Bundesliga yet also speaks against Schalke. The team from Gelsenkirchen nevertheless is in good shape currently, which is probably due to the change in the system. Coach Weinzierl is counting on a 3-3-3-1-system, which is supposed to bring stability in the center especially. With this system it might be possible to stop Dortmund already in the game development.
The district derby is traditionally electrifying the masses. Additionally a struggling Dortmund team is facing a very self-confident Schalke 04 team. We are counting on a very close game with no winner in the end. Our recommendation: Tip X.
