Leverkusen starts with home game
This Wednesday the third German club next to Bayern Munich and Mönchengladbach starts into this year’s Champions League. Bayer Leverkusen is playing against Russian champion CSKA Moscow. An exciting game can be expected. Kick-off is September 14 at 8.45 PM.
Current form Bayer Leverkusen
Bayer Leverkusen currently is experiencing a roller coaster ride performance wise and result wise. They looked good in almost every test game. They also were able to win their first competitive game in the German Cup against lower class SC Hauenstein. But the 2:1 wasn’t that great. The performance in the season opener was a lot better, but unfortunately the result still was an unlucky 1:2 loss to Mönchengladbach. Last weekend they hosted Hamburger SV and over long periods of time Bayer didn’t play well. Thanks to Joker Joel Pohjampalo they won 3:1 after they were down 0:1. The Finn may very well be starting for the first time against CSKA, since he is Bayer’s most accurate striker right now. Additionally Kevin Volland and Stefan Kießling are still injured and won’t be able to play. It can be doubted though, that Pohjampalo will be able to score a hattrick again against the Russian top club.
Current form CSKA Moscow
Last season Roman Abramovich’s club had to fight FK Rostov for the championship but was able to celebrate in the end. Currently CSKA is ranked second in the Russian Premier League behind city rival Spartak. They have 14 points after six games. CSKA played great in their last game before their first international appearance and beat Terek Grozny 3:0. Like Leverkusen Moscow also has a striker in top form. Lacina Trore scored two goals last weekend. Additionally director Roman Eremenko already scored three goals this season. Foregoing the win against Grozny the team of former national team coach Leonid Slutski barely won 1:0 at Tomsk. In the fourth round they drew 1:1 against St. Petersburg. All in all CSKA is very constant and seems stable. That’s maybe because they didn’t get too many new players in the transfer period compared to former years. Moscow can play with their best team against Bayer. But CSKA doesn’t have good memories when it comes to games against German teams. They have played five matches on German ground so far and have lost all of them.
It’s an exciting game at the start of Group E. Leverkusen currently is dependent on the form on the day of Joel Pohjampalos. Apart from him Bayer doesn’t have any fit strikers though. The Schmidt-Eleven still seems to be able to have a successful start into the Champions League in front of their home crowd. Our tip: a close win for Leverkusen, Tip 1.
