Austria under pressure
When the teams of Austria and Ireland meet each other in the parallel game of group D on Saturday, it’s a very important game especially for the hosts. Ireland could distance themselves from a direct competitor in the fight for a world cup ticket, if they win the game. Kick-off is November 12 at 6 PM.
Current form Austria
Lucky bag Austria. The team of Swiss man Marcel Koller showed two faces in the ongoing world cup qualification. They played really well in the first half of their opener against Georgia, but they seemed overwhelmed at times in the second half of the 2:1 victory. The home game against Wales was probably their best so far. Even though Austria was the better team, they had to be content with a 2:2 draw in the end because of two stupid received goals. They played really well on offense however. Austria’s current problem area is defense. One could also see that in the game against Serbia in Belgrad (2:3), when Austria didn’t look good, when Serbia played counter attacks. The problem is, that Austria’s defenders don’t get enough playing time at their clubs. Kevin Wimmer for example played left defender lately, but he spends most of his time on the bench for Tottenham. The following numbers prove how big a problem Austria’s defense is. Austria already received more goals in three games of this world cup qualification than they did in the whole qualification for the EURO in France. To make matters worse number one keeper Robert Almer is out due to injury, as well as inside defender Sebastian Prödl. Additionally midfield motor Zlatko Junuzovic is not fit to play. One advantage for Austria will be their home crowd. The team has played their best games in the past at Happel Stadium.
Current form Ireland
While their opponent’s strengths are mainly on offense, the opposite is the case for Ireland. Martin O’Neill’s team has received as many goals in the whole qualification as Austria did in only one game. One has to admit though, that Ireland’s results have been a little bit lucky. They have had problems at least in one half in the game against Serbia (2:2), against Moldavia (3:1) and especially against Georgia (1:0). One advantage for the players from the island may be their physical strength. Additionally their opponent seems to be vulnerable in standard situations, while this is one of Ireland’s offensive weapons. Just like Koller O’Neill also will miss some important players on Saturday. Southampton striker Shane Long is injured for example. Midfielder James McCarthy (Everton) and Burnley outside defender Steven Ward won’t be able to play as well. Additionally the past results speak for Austria. Ireland was only able to score one point in the last two duels in the world cup qualification for 2014. They lost the game in Vienna 0:1. In total Ireland only won two of the last 14 games against Austria.
Ireland is something like Austria’s favorite opponent. The Koller-Elven also has the stronger roster. If Austria is able to overcome their problems on defense, they need to be favored, also because the injuries on Ireland’s side hurt their team more than Austria’s. Our recommendation: Tip 1.
