Betting tip UEFA Champions League: AS Monaco - FC Villarreal
Tuesday, 23.08.2016 at 20:45 hour
Apart from Rome against Porto this is the top duel in this year’s Champions League Playoff. We are talking about the match between AS Monaco and FC Villareal. The Frenchmen hold all the trumps after a win in the first leg in order to make the promotion reality in front of their home crowd. Kick-off is Tuesday at 8.45 PM.
Current form AS Monaco
The Monegasques have a great starting position. Not even the biggest optimists would have thought that Monaco will be able to win at El Madrigal in Villareal. But the victory is reality and it opened up the doors widely for Leonardo Jardim’s team in order to make it to the highest level of competition. The course of the play favored Monaco though. They were given a penalty shot just minutes into the game and so could keep on playing with the insurance of having scored an important goal away. The win in Spain seems to also have transferred into their league play. After only drawing 2:2 in the season opener against Guincamp in Ligue 1 they could celebrate a 1:0 victory over FC Nantes on the second day of action. Monaco will miss outside defender Benjamin Mendy against Villareal though, because he saw an unnecessary yellow-red card in the added time of the game in Villareal and is now suspended for the retour match. Monaco already showed that they perform well at home in international play this season. In the third round of Champions League qualifications they sent Fenerbahce Istanbul home with a clear 3:1.
Current form FC Villareal
Reversed signs at FC Villareal. While Monaco was able to celebrate their first win in league play last weekend, Marcelinho’s team had to be content with a 1:1 draw against Granada. That was another damper for last year’s fourth placed team in the Primera Divisíon after the loss in the first leg. Additionally the injury list of Villareal is long. It is a big question, whether top striker Cedric Bakambu will be ready to play. The striker is dealing with a thigh injury. Also injured are Roberto Soldado, Jonathan dos Santos and defender Jaume Costa. As a consequence new signee Alexandre Pato will come back into the starting eleven in Monaco. The Brazilian was rested last weekend in league play just like some other key players in order to have the best possible team fit and ready for the game in Monaco. It was Pato who scored the only goal for Villareal at El Madrigal. The Spaniards have to work on their efficiency. In the home game the statistics after the game showed a shooting at the goal ratio of 8:5 in favor of Villareal. Additionally the “Yellow Submarines” weren’t able to translate 59% ball possession into success. All in all these are difficult conditions for Villareal.
Monaco can and probably will put their focus on defense at the beginning of the game. They could even live with one goal of Villareal. But they should not make the mistake of acting too passively. But Monaco showed that they perform well against top teams especially at home, as seen against Fenerbahce. That’s why we don’t believe that the Monegasques will let Villareal take away their advantage. Our recommendation: Tipp X.
