Leverkusen versus the group favorite
After the first game day AS Monaco emerged as the favorite to win group E. The home game against Bayer Leverkusen will be a difficult task for Leonardo Jardim’s team though. Kick-off is Tuesday at 8.45 PM.
Current form AS Monaco
For quite a while everything was going perfectly for the team from the principality. The Monegasques beat defending champion Paris St. Germain amongst others 3:1. Before that they qualified for the Champions League group phase thanks to a win against Villareal. But last week they lost 0:4 against new league leader OSG Nice in Ligue 1. They were able to win their next game again against Angers on the weekend 2:1, but it wasn’t a very god performance either. The Jardim-Eleven has deficits on defense. They will have to get rid of those, after all Leverkusen is a very strong offensive team. It’s positive that Monaco is playing at home however. Kamil Glik and Co. have only drawn at home once this season (2:2 in the season opener against Guingamp), the rest of the home games were all won, most of them clearly. Additionally Jardim benched a couple of his key players against Angers, so the team should be well rested on Tuesday. Monaco also hasn’t lost any of the four games in Leverkusen.
Current form Bayer 04 Leverkusen
While their opponent is ranked second in the league, Bayer Leverkusen can’t get on track in 2016/2017. They are currently only ranked tenth, which is not good enough for Leverkusen. At least they were able to win their last Bundesliga game against Mainz 05 3:2, but the deciding goal only fell in extra time. But Leverkusen was able to come back from a deficit twice in this game. Also Chicharito seems to have found back to old strengths. The Mexican more or less was responsible for the win in Mainz by himself. He scored all three goals. Leverkusen’s defense is worrisome though. Both goals from Mainz were due to faults by a defender, namely new 18-million signee Aleksandar Dragovic. It’s more than questionable whether the Austrian will be in the starting-eleven on Tuesday. The results before the win against Mainz were not great either. They lost against Frankfurt (1:2) and drew against Augsburg. Additionally Leverkusen doesn’t have good memories concerning Monaco. In the group phase of the 2014/2015 Leverkusen lost both games against Monaco. In summary: Bayer has the role of the underdog in this game.
Leverkusen plays too inconsistently at the moment and they are struggling on defense. Monacgo on the other hand seems to have gotten over the loss to Nice and is very strong at home. That’s why we are counting on a home win for Monaco. Our recommendation: Tip 1.
