Obligatory task for Argentina
There is no discussion about who is the favorite in the game on Wednesday, when Argentina plays against Paraguay in the South America qualification for the World Cup 2018. Especially in front of their home crowd the “Gauchos” shouldn’t give themselves the nakedness of losing. Kick-off is October 12 at 1.30 PM MET.
Current form Argentina
Argentina’s roster is full of superstars like Dybala, Di Maria or Lamela. All of them play for top teams. And still Argentina didn’t always manage to channel the player’s individual qualities into a great team performance in the last couple of weeks and months. Last week for example they only managed a meagre 2:2 against Peru. Argentina seems not to perform well under pressure even though they have a lot of international experience. They let go of a lead twice against Peru. New coach Edgardo Bauza, who took over as coach this August has a mediocre balance so far. In three games the world cup finalist of 2014 only won once and drew twice. Argentina also drew 2:2 against Venezuela. It’s interesting to see that the team seems to grow with the tasks, because the only win so far was against Uruguay (1:0). They were also able to make up for the loss in the Copa America final against Chile (2:1). The team still showed some flaws on defense though lately. That’s why it’s important for them to focus 90 minutes against Paraguay.
Current form Paraguay
Individually Paraguay can’t compete with the great favorite Argentina. Unlike their opponent only a couple of Paraguay’s players earn their money in top leagues. They may have disadvantages physically, because the South American leagues are more technique driven. Like Argentina Paraguay also was able to win one game, since Francisco Arce took over as head coach in August. The other two games were lost though. One loss came at home a couple of days ago against Colombia. Paraguay was able to compete with Colombia for a long time, but they received the deciding goal in minute 90. The Arce-Eleven is playing quite good defense, but they struggle on offense. They only shot at Colombia’s goal directly once. It was the second game in a row without scoring a goal after the 0:4 against Uruguay. So it might be an advantage that Argentina showed some flaws on defense lately. Paraguay proved against Chile in September that they can compete with top teams. They were able to celebrate a 2:1 victory.
Argentina probably isn’t very self-confident after their last couple performances. Additionally their most important player Lionel Messi won’t play on Wednesday. We believe that it’s going to be a close game with the better end for the favorite thanks to home court advantage. Our recommendation: Tip 1.
