Will Argentina be able to rehabilitate?
After the duel with Brazil the national team of Argentina has another key game on Wednesday. Colombia will be anything but an easy opponent. So the pressure is clearly on the hosts. Kick-off is November 16 at 00.30 PM CET.
Current form Argentina
It was another deep hit for the star team from Argentina in the course of this world cup qualification. We are talking about the 0:3 debacle against Brazil a couple of days ago. Like we said, the comeback of Lionel Messi wasn’t enough to stand a chance against the multiple world champions. In total Argentina has now not been able to win their last four games, because they also lost to Paraguay very surprisingly 0:1. Despite players like Higuain or Agüero the offense has been Argentina’s weak spot in the last two games. They are lacking the needed efficiency especially against stronger opponents. Argentina had almost as many great chances to score as Brazil in 90 minutes, but while Brazil was able to use three of their four great opportunities to score, Messi and Co. haven’t been able to convert a single one. The “Gauchos” are currently also harmless in standard situations. They weren’t able to capitalize six corners for example. It seems as though their system is not ideal for the current roster. Argentina has been playing a defensive 4-4-1-1 system which doesn’t support the strengths of the many great offensive players on the team. Hope gives the fact that the last two wins against Bolivia (2:0) and Uruguay (1:0) have been obtained at home. Additionally Argentina won their last game against Colombia (1:0).
Current form Colombia
There are no signs of the worries of Colombia’s opponent. While Argentina almost must win this game and is currently only ranked sixth, Colombia is the first pursuer of leader Brazil at the moment. The team’s past results have been mediocre too though. A couple of days ago they only drew 0:0 against Chile and before that they only achieved a 2:2 draw against Uruguay. Therefore Colombia could only win one of their last four games. This was a close 1:0 victory over Paraguay. One shouldn’t forget however, that the last two draws came against two of the probably four strongest teams of this qualification. José Pekerman’s team also struggled to convert their chances though, especially against Chile. They haven’t been able to score a goal even though they had 63% ball possession and 10 great chances. So the strikers are called upon for the duel with Messi and Co. There would be enough quality on the roster to score many goals. Players like Radamel Falcao (Monaco) or Carlos Bacca (Milan) already proved their accuracy in their respective leagues in 2016/2017.
Argentina is almost with their back against the wall. The loss to Brazil was another damper in the fight for a world cup ticket. Wednesday’s opponent is anything but easy, that’s why we don’t believe that the winless streak of the “Gauchos” will come to an end. Our recommendation: Tip X.
