Betting tip UEFA Europa League: 1. FSV Mainz 05 - AS Saint-Etienne
Thursday, 15.09.2016 at 19:00 hour
Mainz starts with home game
Mainz 05 was one of the positive surprises in the German Bundesliga last year. The Schmidt-Eleven was able to qualify for Europe League. On the first day of action in Group C they play against St. Etienne. Kick-off is Thursday at 7 PM.
Current form 1. FC Mainz 05
Management in Mainz is not very satisfied with this year’s performances so far. Even though the team played quite well, the results were not good at all. They were only able to score one point in two games and so are currently only ranked 14th. The only win this season was the cup game against Unterhaching, but the Schmidt team only won after a penalty shoot-out 7:5. Mainz had a pretty good game in their season opener against Dortmund, but lost unluckily 1:2 in the end. Last weekend Mainz had to endure a debacle against Hoffenheim. The Schmidt-Eleven was not able to safe a clear 3:0 and 4:1 lead respectively. The game ended in a 4:4 draw. Problems are especially obvious on defense right now. Schmidt’s team often struggles with high balls, which could become a problem against St. Etienne as well. The Frenchmen have some quite head strong players. Additionally Mainz is missing four defenders, namely Ramalho, Bussman, Donati and Zimling. So it will be even more important to play variable on offense, which has worked out quite well so far. In two games four different players were able to score.
Current form St. Etienne
AS St. Etienne has similar problems like Mainz. The team is lacking consistency. Good games are often followed by bad ones and vice versa. The season opener of Ligue 1 was lost 2:3 to Girondins Bordeaux. Then they won against Montpellier (3:1) and drew against Toulouse (0:0). After that they were able to draw against PSG in the last minutes (1:1). In total Christophe Galtier’s team finished the last three competitive games with a draw. Among those games is also the return match of the Europe League Play Off against Beitar Jerusalem. St. Etienne proved that they are able to survive away when they won 2:1 in Israel. While Mainz is doing okay on offense and has difficulties on defense, the situation is reversed in St. Etienne. In the past three games they only scored one goal, but they only received one too. The Frenchmen would have some great offensive players though. St. Etienne hopes that Robert Beric will be successful against Mainz. He already has Europe League experience and he is currently St. Etienne’s top scorer. Unlike Mainz they will only miss one player due to injury on Thursday, namely Bryan Dabo.
Considering their market value both teams are almost equal. Mainz proved against Dortmund that they can compete with top teams. The same counts for St. Etienne with their draw against PSG. We are counting on a close game that will end in a draw. Our recommendation: Tip X.
